BMW i8
White/Black · Black interior · Gloss
The i8 looks like something BMW showed at a motor show and then forgot to water down. Dihedral doors, floating rear buttresses and a two-tone white-and-black body were all production reality, wrapped around a carbon-fibre passenger cell. It draws more questions per mile than almost anything here, and it pulls away from a stoplight in complete silence before the engine ever wakes.

What makes it special
- Plug-in hybrid drive means it can leave quietly and arrive quietly — unusual for a car that looks like this
- Dihedral doors and a carbon passenger cell: exotic engineering, not a styling package
- Starlight headliner fitted to this car (aftermarket), which turns night drives into the main event
Worth knowing
The i8's passenger cell is carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic — BMW built a dedicated plant in Moses Lake, Washington, powered by hydroelectricity, to make the fibre for it.
